  • Bio

As one of Britain's most innovative and celebrated composers, Michael Nyman's work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he's also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and film-maker. Although he's far too modest to allow the description 'Renaissance Man', his restless creativity and multi-faceted art has made him one of the most fascinating and influential cultural icons of our times. At this stage of a long and notable career, he might forgivably have been content to rest on his considerable laurels. Yet instead of looking back on a lifetime of achievement that ranges from his award-winning score for the film The Piano to the acclaimed opera The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat, via a string of high-profile collaborations with everyone from Sir Harrison Birtwistle to Damon Albarn, he's still looking forward - pushing the boundaries of his art with a diverse and prolific burst of creativity as energetic and challenging as any new and iconoclastic young kid on the block. Nyman first made his mark on the musical world in the late 1960s, when he invented the term 'minimalism' and, still in his mid-twenties, earned one of his earliest commissions, to write the libretto for Birtwistle's 1969 opera Down By The Greenwood Side. In 1976 he formed his own ensemble, the Campiello Band (now the Michael Nyman Band) and over three decades and more, the group has been the laboratory for much of his inventive and experimental compositional work. For more than 30 years, he had also enjoyed a highly successful career as a film composer, the role in which - sometimes to his slightly rueful regret - he is probably best known by the general public. His most notable scores number a dozen Peter Greenaway films, including such classics as The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover; Neil Jordan's The End Of The Affair; several Michael Winterbottom features including Wonderland and A Cock And Bull Story; the Hollywood blockbuster Gattaca - and, of course, his unforgettable music for Jane Campion's 1993 film, The Piano, the soundtrack album of which has sold more than three million copies. He also co-wrote the score for the 1999 film Ravenous with his friend and sometime protg, Damon Albarn. His music was used in the 2009 BAFTA award winning and Oscar nominated film, Man on Wire. In 2008, he published the sumptuous photo-book Sublime. His first gallery exhibition, Videofile, in which his photos are presented alongside a series of short films, was exhibited at the De la Warr Pavillion January to March 2009. In October 2009 he released The Glare, a collaborative collection of songs with David McAlmont, which cast his work in a new light. The album - recorded with the Michael Nyman Band - finds McAlmont putting lyrics based on contemporary news stories to 11 pieces of Nyman music drawn from different phases of his career.

When Michael Nyman published his study Experimental Music: Cage and Beyond (1974, repr. 1999), he could hardly have foreseen his own contribution to that “beyond”. Disaffected with the then current orthodoxies of modernism, Nyman had abandoned composition in 1964. Having a route back to composing emerged in 1976: Harrison Birtwistle, then musical director of the National Theatre, commissioned him to provide arrangements for a production of Carlo Goldoni’s Il Campiello, for which Nyman assembled “the loudest unamplified street band” he could imagine. The band stayed together after the play’s run and evolved into the Michael Nyman band. This is the laboratory in which Nyman has formulated his compositional style around strong melodies, flexible yet assertive rhythms and precisely articulated ensemble playing. <> Nyman’s music has reached its largest audience through his film scores, most notably for Peter Greenaway, with whom he collaborated on 11 movies between 1976 and 1991(including The Draughtsman’s Contract, Drowning by Numbers). Other directors he has worked with include Jane Campion (The Piano), Volker Schlöndorff (The Ogre), Neil Jordan (The End of the Affair) and Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland, The Claim, 9 Songs, A Cock and Bull Story ). <> Recent premieres have included: I was a Total Virgin, a collaboration with Hanif Kureishi commissioned by London Sinfonietta and premiered at FuseLeeds06, and future works are to include two BBC commissions: the first to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, while the second is for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He has written a percussion concerto for Colin Currie and is currently working on a cello concerto for Nina Kotova and a piece for orchestra and choir commissioned by BBC Symphony Orchestra that will premiere at the Barbican in March 2007. <> Michael’s latest venture is the launch of his own record label – MN Records. The label opened in spring 2005 with The Piano Sings, the composer’s debut solo piano album. This was followed by a recording of the acclaimed opera Man and Boy:Dada and the soundtrack for director Laurence Dunmore’s The Libertine. MN Records now has nine titles available. <> At every turn Nyman has proved eminently practical. Not for him the ivory tower anguish of a tormented composer grappling with abstract systems. Rather he has consistently displayed an openness to collaboration, a spry sense of humour, a literate imagination and an instinctive ability to engage a highly diverse audience.
