Bio
For a number of years now, it seems that only bands from the USA or Britain could write rock history. But that's in the past now that Switzerland is attracting international attention. This small Alpine nation has produced one of the most impressive, top class and outstanding candidates with GOTTHARD. They set the ultimate standard now for content, music and power, redefining the term "Rock". .... This exceptional group is taking things a step further – defining Rock in a new way. They are attracting attention from no less a personage than Canadian producer Rich Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush), who phoned the GOTTHARD management and declared that he thought the group was great and that he really would like to work with them. A few days after hearing them, he travelled to Tessin to start collaboration with them on their new songs. .... With more than two million records sold, it's clear that GOTTHARD know how to rock – but they never rest on their laurels! Three times triple platinum, four times double platinum, four times platinum, one gold single and the official anthem for the Swiss Olympic team in the summer of 2004, along with the official fan anthem of the Swiss national football team for the European Football Championships in 2008, plus a series of sell-out concerts, including the Zürich Hallenstadion and the celebrated German Tour with DEEP PURPLE, where they played to audiences of more than 75,000. These are some of the high points up to now of the most successful Swiss group to date. .... «NEED TO BELIEVE».. Rock history at its best. Of course it is not only the statistics which cause GOTTHARD to stand out. They have loads of charm, style and timeless authenticity; this is what makes them so original worldwide. With lead singer Steve Lee they front one of the best voices of all time. His characteristic voice which gets deep under your skin charms both the public and his fellow musicians. No surprise then that he has worked with great names in music: an orchestral project with the well-known Jon Lord (DEEP PURPLE) and an impressive duet with operatic diva Monserrat Caballe («One Life, One Soul»). .... GOTTHARD have managed, even in times of recession and falling CD sales, to forge ahead. They have continued to win over the public and increase their recognition factor. .... "Gotthard, as a credible rock band, shows that consistency is exciting people again. This is also obvious to the TV industry" says RTL editor Christian Sorgnit. His colleagues from print and radio have reached the same verdict. .... "Their ambition is shown by the fact that their albums are now successful worldwide".. - Andy Kletzin, Jolie .... "The high standard of this Swiss band, their persistence and their sympathetic relationship with the fans gives expectations for a big international career" ..– Arno Frank Eser, music editor of the Abendzeitung München .... "A voice unafraid of heights – but with Mega-power".. - Till Hofmeister, Musikchef HR3 .... "GOTTHARD – they are really a massive boulder in the rock terrain! And still not even a small chunk splinters off".. - Tom Glas, Bayern 3 .... "Gotthard have proved that Lugano can also be a little L.A. – And Swiss rock music has no need to hide behind the US competition".. - Lukas Rüttimann, Blick Schweiz .... "Gotthard are one of those bands where you can just let yourself go and need not worry about the future of rock music".. - Oliver Lippert, monstersandcritics.de .... "The Swiss hard rockers have held their ground in the European scene for years because of the amazing voice of Steve Lee" .. - Matthias Haehl, Migros Magazin, Schweiz .... "With eight studio albums which have sold more than 2 million copies, Gotthard is the most successful rock band that Switzerland has ever produced. In Germany, too, the band is one of the most popular live acts and is filling even larger halls".. - Christian Fischer, Piranha Medien .... STEVE LEE (R.I.P.) MARC LYNN LEO LEONI HENA HABEGGER FREDDY SCHERER In particular, the release of the 2005 album «Lipservice» enabled Gotthard to achieve their biggest breakthrough. Successful shows throughout Europe were followed by frenetically celebrated gigs in faraway countries such as Japan, Russia and Brazil. .... One of the reasons for their success is the unchanging line-up. The original quartet: Marc Lynn (bass), Hena Habegger (drums), Leo Leoni (guitar) and the extraordinary singer Steve Lee, are still together. A few years ago, Freddy Scherer arrived to strengthen the team with a second guitarist and completed the group so well that you can't now imagine them without him. .... Unlike most other bands, GOTTHARD embodies pure delight in performing and is at the same time highly professional and ambitious. These are qualities which are underlined by the new album «Need to Believe», to be released on 4th September. In cooperation with the well-known producer Rich Chycki (Aerosmith), a musical creation has evolved which combines emotional rock with haunting mainstream melodies. An album which sounds raw and playful as well as experienced, mature and relaxed. .... Many of the tracks on «Need to Believe» are clear statements that GOTTHARD is a rock band with no compromise. Numbers like the dazzling «Shangri-la» or the anthem-like «Need to Believe» demonstrate the massive contribution GOTTHARD makes to the music scene. And with emotional ballads like «Tears to Cry», they show their sensitive side once more, which has been their strength from the very beginning. .... The album title «Need to Believe» was a deliberate choice. As Steve Lee explained: "We wanted to give encouragement, particularly now in this time of crisis it is important to believe in something. It isn't just coincidence that the saying "Faith can move Mountains" exists. If you think positive and don't give up, you'll win in the end. That always was the motto of GOTTHARD". .... In short: this is an album whose title becomes a motto: GOTTHARD represents the next rock generation, who want to do their own thing without outside influence and thus have been able to establish themselves and to enrich the music world. .... And not only that: in April 2010, the film «Max Schmeling» will mark the first international film premiere with a GOTTHARD song on the soundtrack! So there it is – whether in the musical sense or the geographic one – the biggest and best embodiment of Switzerland – «GOTTHARD». -

“Starlight” is not only the first official single to be released but also the lucky star shining on the new formation’s collaboration. Now the first signs of life of this musical “Firebirth” are showing themselves – strong, catchy and full of life!
“Starlight” can be found on the playlist of all relevant radio stations. On Radio “Rock Antenne”, “Starlight can be heard regularly from this week on. A video clip of the song will follow in the next few weeks …
The single is available from Itunes and other major music sites.
New singer confirmed. He is Swiss! Dear GOTTHARD Fans – it gives us great pleasure to announce that we have found a new singer. The successor to Steve Lee, who was killed in a tragic accident last year, is Nic Maeder and is Swiss-born. Nic was born in 1971 in Lausanne, lived in Melbourne, Australia and grew up between Switzerland and “Down Under”. “Nic not only has a great voice and is a fantastic musician, but we also have a great person in our midst”, says Leo. “We can rock again at last”.
During the months after the decision to carry on was taken, we received a huge amount of applications from all over the world; it was really overwhelming! At this point we would really like to thank everyone, especially the candidates, to whom we were not able to send a personal message. Thank you for your understanding and we wish all of you lots of luck and success in the future!
“The search took a long time but it was clear to all of us when we met Nic that he was the right guy. With him we can enjoy the music again and celebrate new success,” states Hena. “I’m really happy that we are continuing”. The final decision for Nic Maeder was unanimous. “We noticed straight away that the chemistry, both musically and personally, was right. For us, he is the new member of the family”, says Freddy.
Nic Maeder, who besides his singing position also plays guitar and piano, is a very talented and creative person. His songwriting ability also means he fits perfectly into the Gotthard family. He is the missing piece in the puzzle. “Music has been my companion all my life and always was an important part of it. It is a great feeling to be able to share in the birth of a song and to see how it keeps growing. I can experience that with GOTTHARD and it makes me happy. I am making music with friends,” says Nic Maeder.
Of course you can write a lot about a new singer, but in the end there is nothing better than seeing and hearing him sing. We therefore decided to produce a song plus video as a thank you to our fans, which can be downloaded free of charge. It is dedicated to all our Fans who didn’t lose their faith and trust in GOTTHARD. You have supported us with all your strength during the past months. Thank you so much!
Marc “With Nic, we have taken the right decision for GOTTHARD. A lot of courage is needed to step into the footsteps of such a great singer. For that, Nic has earned our respect. Let’s never forget this and make Nic welcome in the family.
We are in the studio at the moment and are working with renewed energy and enthusiasm on songs for a new album, which will be released in the spring of 2012…keep on rocking!!!
GOTTHARD
GOTTHARD releases the previously announced and long-awaited live album entitled “Homegrown – Alive In Lugano“ on September 30, 2011.
“Homegrown – Alive In Lugano“ contains a live recording of the band's concert on the 17th of July 2010 in Lugano, which was one of the last concerts with vocalist Steve Lee, who tragically died during a motorbike trip through the USA on the 5th of October 2010 in an accident which was not his fault. Due to the sudden accidental death of Steve Lee, the CD's release was postponed.
“Lugano was where it all began and so the circle is closed of all that we've experienced with our friend Steve Lee“, comments bassist Marc Lynn. “The memories of the past 20 years on stage with Steve are brought again to life intensively with this album. They reflect the memorable times that we were able to enjoy on the Mount Olympus of Rock'n'Roll.“
The concert in Lugano took place during the local HOG Rally, a big annual event organized by Harley Davidson bikers. This gig in Lugano meant a lot to GOTTHARD. Being able to play for the Harley circle in their hometown was an unforgettable experience.
All the GOTTHARD musicians are enthusiastic Harley-Davidson bikers themselves and perform for the purposes of such events on every occasion or take part in rallies. In addition, “Homegrown“ was one of the very few concerts where GOTTHARD played in their hometown Lugano.
“Steve was warmer and more cheerful than he had been in a long time“, guitarist Freddy Scherer remembers. “The chemistry between him and the audience couldn't have been more intense, despite the fact that there were more than 20,000 people standing on the piazza. It is a stroke of good luck that we recorded this memorable concert, for unfortunately it was one of the last ones with Steve.“
“And all that although the gig was in the balance for some time that evening“, drummer Hena Habegger recollects. “Shortly before we were supposed to go on stage, we got caught in a thunderstorm and all the equipment was soaked. However, we didn't give up hope and finally got the go-ahead just before midnight.“
The “home game” in Lugano includes some spectacular bonus material, among others – as an absolute highlight – one still unreleased song entitled 'THE TRAIN', which GOTTHARD recorded “live in the studio“ together with Steve and which hasn’t appeared on any record so far.
The enclosed bonus DVD shows chosen recordings of another historical concert of GOTTHARD: On the 31st of December 1999, the rock group played a gig over the course of the millennium – which also took place on the local piazza in Lugano and can be seen as one of the band's most exceptional shows to date.
“Music has allowed us to travel round the whole world together during the last 20 years“, guitarist Leo Leoni summarises. “In doing so, we've shared lots of unforgettable moments that rank among the best times of our lives. Anyhow, returning to Lugano has always been something special. It's the place we belong to and where we have strong and deep roots. Apart from the bonus material, the DVD also contains interviews with the remaining band members, which makes “Homegrown – Alive In Lugano“ a unique memento.
“Homegrown – Alive In Lugano” will be released in remembrance of the first anniversary of Steve's death and recalls one of the world's greatest rock vocalists in an extremely personal way. The CD will be released only in an upmarket high-end Digipak-edition, to do justice to the special legacy that Steve Lee bequeathed to this world. It will be published on the 30th of September via the Musikvertrieb (Switzerland) and Nuclear Blast/Warner Music (rest of the world).
The album's artwork captures the overwhelming emotions which always connected GOTTHARD with their hometown Lugano, in atmospheric live pictures showing the strong bond with their faithful fans.
“Homegrown – Alive In Lugano” marks the end of an era for GOTTHARD. Currently, the band is searching for a new singer and will soon start a new chapter in the band's history.
