Sayreville Singer Prepares For Debut SAYREVILLE—“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Heather Djan, 22, an aspiring singer who lives in Sayreville, takes William Shakespeare’s words to heart. As she prepares for the release of her first full-length album later this year, Djan hones her chops by singing at open mic nights in New York and New Jersey. But rather than use her real name, Dian prefers to perform under what she calls “aliases.” “I think of Heather as a shy person, so I kind of feel like I can put on a persona, like Superman inside a telephone booth,” said Djan, who recently billed herself as “Heavenly” at an open mic in Brooklyn, The singer eventually plans to use her given name, but she wants to wait until the timing and the material is right. Djan said she plans to wait until her album is done before deciding whether to put her name on it. Djan, a teller at the Provident Bank in Fords, has been singing since the age of four, first in school talent shows and then in clubs and colleges. She enjoys singing in various music styles, from rock to R&B, and points to Madonna as one of her biggest inspirations. “People remember her, if not for her voice for her approach,” Djan said. In addition to singing, Djan also writes music, first penning the words in poem-form before collaborating with musicians on the music.
