  • Saying Goodbye to Myspace

    ..
    Hello All!

Hope this message finds you all well and happy. This may or may not come as a surprise to some of you, but we've decided that it's time for us to say goodbye to Myspace. The mediums for communicating and sharing media will forever be changing, and we suppose that's something to be grateful for. Hopefully we can all manage to do it without jumping around too much! For the time being, we'll post updates about the band over at our Facebook page. Thanks so much for all your support! Looking forward to the future --

  • september tour and other stuff

    Hi everyone!

We're getting back in the van (so to speak) and hitting the vast United States of America next month. After awesome shows in NZ, AU, EU, UK, BR, JP and probably some other places, there's nowhere we'd rather be than the m'f-ing US of A -- cruising around on Eisenhower's dusty veins, hanging out at your local retail outlet center, maybe getting an RC at the Long John Silver's-A&W combo.

We're going to pack about 18 nights' worth of songs into our rucksacks and just plan on letting a few go in every city.  The songs will be from phylum Orca, genus Mount Wittenberg; genus Bitte; various specimens of the Rise Above family, maybe some from the New Attitude kingdom, and hopefully a few other more unclassifiable ones ... hopefully they'll fly up into the trees and indigenize alright, like those parrots who build nests on top of phone poles in your old babysitter's neighborhood:..

Maybe you can help them build their nests or find food for their young ones:

In other related news, we're rolling out the tricked-out Expanded Edition of Bitte Orca next month too. It includes a second disc that has an EP-length live acoustic show that we played at Other Music in New York last year, and it collects all the B-sides from the Bitte material in one place. So that's kind of sweet (something to remember if you find yourself in a Best Buy with $20 burning a hole in your pocket). Btw here is the version of Temecula Sunrise that we played at that show.
We're also teaming up with Other Music to put out an exclusive edition of 500 white-label vinyl release of the Other Music show, which you can pre-order here.

Also, don't forget that the EP we made earlier this year with insanely brilliant Icelandic person Björk is up exclusively at mountwittenbergorca.com. This is our freshest shit yet and we are all so proud of it....

It'd be awesome to see you out this fall! Thanks so much for supporting us and making it possible for us to do this -- all love.

  • Dirty Projectors + Björk

In April 2009, Brandon Stosuy from Stereogum.com asked me if we wanted to play a benefit concert at a bookstore in New York.  I said yes.  He asked Björk the same thing, and she said yes.  Then he asked us if we wanted to collaborate, and we said yes.  Björk asked me what we should do, and I said, "I don't know, I guess I'd really love to write a bunch of new songs for us to sing together?" And she said Yes.

That same month, Amber from Dirty Projectors was walking along a ridge on Mount Wittenberg, north of San Francisco.  She was looking out at the ocean and saw a little family of whales, as you sometimes do in April on the Northern California coast.  I wrote some songs about it and sent them to Björk, who agreed to sing the part of the mom whale.  The songs became Mount Wittenberg Orca.  Amber and Angel and Haley sang the part of the kid whales, and I sang the part of Amber.  We sang all week long and learned the music just in time to perform it at the bookstore on May 8th.

Then our album Bitte Orca came out and we went on tour forever.  We finally got a chance to record Wittenberg last month, almost exactly a year after we first sang it.  We went into the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and rehearsed it for three days, then we recorded it as quickly and as live as possible.  We only overdubbed lead vocals and a guitar solo.

We've decided to give away all the money that Wittenberg generates to the project of creating international marine protected areas.  Only 1% of the oceans are protected in any way and this is a huge problem.  We're working with the National Geographic Society to create areas of sustainability, so the oceans don't end up like a giant poisonous corpse hugging the continents.  You can learn more about this project here and here and here and here.

We're so psyched about how this recording came out and hope you are too. Don't listen on those tinny computer speakers -- put in on the stereo and blast dat shiiiiiiiiii!!

    Enjoy
